Case Study: Grant's Tomb

After years of neglect plus a losing battle with graffiti vandals, the Overlook Pavilion of the General Grant National Memorial, commonly known as Grant's Tomb, is undergoing a renewal. The tomb itself was restored and re-dedicated in 1997.

Paragon Restoration Corporation, the contractor, and the National Park Service reviewed a number of methods including chemical treatments and power washing. They chose The Farrow System after seeing how quickly, safely, and economically the process could clean the structure and bring back its classic beauty.

Not only did the project require the removal of over 40 year's worth of graffiti and coats of paint that literally covered the building, it required only nondestructive cleaning methods. Further complications include a limited budget and tight project deadlines.

Joe Longo, the project supervisor from Troop Construction, said The Farrow System was "The perfect machine for the perfect job. This is a $3 million project, and we had to make the building look like original." Joe is thankful The Farrow System is so efficient. "When The Farrow System arrived on the job, we were behind schedule. We estimated 16 days to do the job, but we finished it in 8. Because of Farrow, we wound up actually ahead of schedule." Regarding the capabilities of the system, Joe remarked "The media is explosive, not aggressive, and it took off 3 and 4 layers of paint without making a mark on the granite surface. Cleanup is easy, you simply sweep up."
